Ofgem announces CEO Jonathan Brearley’s departure and transition plan

The Gas and Electricity Markets Board today announced that Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Brearley will be stepping down from his role at the end of March to take up the position of Permanent Secretary at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

During Jonathan’s tenure, Ofgem navigated a period of significant transformation.

Under Jonathan’s leadership, the organisation stabilised the energy market and protected consumers during the gas crisis, reformed the financial resilience of the retail sector, and saw consumer satisfaction rise from record lows to record highs.

Jonathan drove progress towards the government’s clean power ambitions, with notable achievements which include innovative regulatory reforms to infrastructure, the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment initiative, a major grid overhaul, and the creation of NESO.

Through both the Covid pandemic and the gas crisis, Ofgem, guided by Jonathan, demonstrated remarkable resilience and tenacity, building essential skills and capabilities during unprecedented times.

The Board will initiate a formal search process to appoint a permanent successor. In the interim, Tim Jarvis, currently the Director General for Markets, will serve as Acting CEO, ensuring continuity and stability during the transition period.
