Energy regulation
Get licences guidance, apply for a licence and how we monitor and make sure that companies meet licence conditions.
Our role is to protect energy consumers, especially those who need extra help by making sure that they are treated fairly and benefit from a cleaner, greener environment.
We set the rules that companies must follow, these are called licence conditions.
Energy licences
We grant licenses to companies to carry out activities in energy markets.
Check if you need to apply for a licence.
Companies who have an energy licence must follow the conditions in their licence.
Energy licence publications
Licences, conditions and guidance.
Regulating energy markets
We regulate energy markets by:
- issuing licences and setting licence conditions
- managing changes to industry codes
- making sure that energy companies are following the rules, and taking action if not
- providing guidance for energy companies
Read about what we regulate.
Compliance and enforcement
We stand up for consumers by monitoring compliance with the rules. Where we suspect market abuse or harm to consumers, our compliance and enforcement teams work with companies to put things right.
We investigate companies we think might have breached their licence conditions or the regulations we enforce. Read about how we enforce.
Energy codes
Industry codes underpin the electricity and gas wholesale and retail markets.
Market participants are required to comply with the industry codes in accordance with the conditions of their licence.
Our role is to approve or reject changes that code bodies propose, called code modifications. Read about energy codes.
