Key points of interest from the Renewables Obligation Annual Report for the year ending 31 March 2016:

Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) issued and renewable generation

  • We issued 90.4 million ROCs compared to 71.3 million in 2014-15. This was above the total UK supplier obligation of 84.4 million ROCs.
  • ROCs issued represented 69.1TWh of renewable generation, equivalent to 23.4% of the total electricity supplied in the UK; 25.2% when the 5.6TWh of generation by Feed-in Tariffs installations is added.
  • 33.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions were avoided from renewable generation under the scheme, a 14.4% increase on last year.

Generating stations accredited

  • We accredited 6,724 generating stations, a small increase from 2014-15 when we accredited 6,658.
  • 6,308 of the stations we accredited were microgenerators based in Northern Ireland, over 99% of which were domestic solar PV installations.
  • The aggregate capacity of the stations we accredited was 2,033MW – 58.2% of which was solar PV.

Compliance by licensed electricity suppliers and scheme value

  • 84.38 million ROCs were presented by suppliers, which was 99.9% of the total obligation, the highest proportion since the RO began. The previous highest was 99.1% in 2014-15.
  • For the first time since the RO scheme launched, there were insufficient funds available in the buy-out and late payment funds for us to redistribute to suppliers, so we made no redistribution payments for the 2015-16 obligation period.
  • Each ROC was worth £44.33 (this is the buy-out price plus a recycle value of £0).
