Energy licences and guidance
How we set the rules that companies must follow to work in energy markets.
Companies need to have a licence to do any work in energy markets, including generating, moving or supplying energy.
We grant licences as the main way we regulate energy markets in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).
Get an energy licence
You must apply for an energy licence. When you have submitted your application to us, we will review it. We will consider the evidence you have given and check if your company is able to comply with the conditions of an energy licence.
If we grant your company an energy licence, you must meet the standard conditions for your licensed activity and any special conditions.
Meet licence conditions
We issue guidance about meeting licence conditions. We also publish guidance about how we monitor companies to check if they are following the rules.
As part of our role, we also update and make changes to licence conditions. These are called licence modifications. You need to make sure that you follow the rules in the latest version of conditions.
We propose and consult on changes to the conditions to clarify the rules, protect consumers and secure infrastructure upgrades.
Manage a licence
You must manage your licence and work with us on any issues with licence conditions. This includes situations where meeting a condition is not within consumers' interests.
