North West Coast Connections (NWCC) is a proposed new transmission project to connect a potential 3.4GW nuclear power station at the Moorside site in Cumbria.
In 2015 National Grid published its favoured route corridor following public consultation and it consulted again in 2016. In June 2017 National Grid announced that it is pausing work on the project. You can find further information on National Grid’s plans on its North West Coast Connections website.
Initial Needs Case Assessment
During 2016 we carried out a Strategic Wider Works Initial Needs Case Assessment, which considered:
- Whether we think there is a technical need for the project.
- How NGET has narrowed down the option it has taken forward to its planning consultation.
- Whether the project, or sections of it, are suitable for our extending competition in electricity transmission arrangements.
As the project is at an early stage of development and is still going through the planning process our assessment at this stage is not intended to confirm the need for any funding for the project at this stage.
Following our November 2016 consultation, in July 2017 we published an Update on our assessment of the North West Coast Connections project.
