Key points of interest from the Renewables Obligation Annual Report for the year ending 31 March 2019:
Compliance by licensed electricity suppliers and scheme value
- 107.64 million Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) were presented by suppliers. This was 84.34% of the total obligation of 127.62 million ROCs, and a slightly lower proportion in comparison to the 87.6% presented for the 2017-18 obligation year.
- This resulted in the largest buy-out and late payment funds ever recorded on the scheme - totalling over £846.9 million.
- Each ROC was worth £55.04, leading to a scheme value of £5.9 billion.
Mutualisation
- In 2018-19, 21 suppliers did not meet their obligation: this resulted in a shortfall of £97.5m in the buy-out fund. This shortfall triggered mutualisation for the second time in the RO schemes’ history.
Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) issued and renewable generation
- We issued 105.9 million ROCs in 2018-19. This is 5.3% more than the 100.6 million ROCs issued in 2017-18.
- ROCs were issued based on 79.1 TWh of renewable generation. This was equivalent to 28.5% of the UK electricity supply market. This rises to 99.7 TWh of renewable generation and the equivalent of 35.9% of UK supply when including generation from the Feed-in Tariffs (FIT) and Contracts for Difference (CfD) schemes.
Generating stations accredited
- In 2018-19 we accredited 11 generating stations with an aggregate capacity of 319 MW. This is substantially less than the 210 stations accredited during 2017-18, with a combined capacity of 2,406 MW.
- From the start of the scheme in 2002 until the end of 2018-19, we have accredited 26,525 generating stations with a total capacity of 35.2GW.
