As part of BBC 5 Live's energy day today, Philip Cullum, Partner for Consumer and Demand Insight, took part in a consumer panel hosted by 5 Live presenter Shelagh Fogarty.  The other guests included Paul Massara, Chief Executive, Npower; Sam Peacock, Director of External Relations; SSE; Mark Todd from the Energy Helpline; and Jimmy Pugh from National Energy Action.

Philip explained how Ofgem’s reforms for a simpler, clearer and fairer energy market will make it much easier for people to compare deals, as it would result in a major cut in the number tariffs.

He also talked about Ofgem’s enforceable Standards of Conduct for how energy suppliers should treat household and business customers. These were the first of the retail market reforms to go live last week.

The standards will ensure that customers are treated fairly and that suppliers act quickly to solve problems when things go wrong.

Philip also gave two television interviews for the BBC Newschannel and BBC 1pm news, where he talked more about Ofgem’s retail market reforms and the work Ofgem does to make energy clearer by publishing information on wholesale  prices, energy bills and our estimates of the margins that suppliers make.

You can listen to the show on BBC iPlayer.
