Outlines the agreement between CRE and Ofgem for further electricity interconnection capacity between France and Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).

Details

CRE and Ofgem have committed to carry out a joint analysis on future interconnection between the two countries. We aim to start the analysis within the next two years.

Background

France and the UK have worked in partnership on electricity interconnection projects since 1986.

CRE, the French Energy Regulatory Commission, and Ofgem, Great Britain’s independent energy regulator, regularly assess the opportunity for new interconnection capacity. They are assessed, for example, by estimating the costs and benefits that could be expected from these types of projects.

In February 2025, we agreed with CRE to continue to look at further interconnection development opportunities. This included projects of around 1 Gigawatt (GW) capacity between France and Great Britain.
