Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the energy sector
Details how we aim to regulate the use of AI within the energy sector to make sure it is used safely, responsibly and sustainably.
Our role and responsibilities
AI is being used by the energy sector across Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). It can create efficiencies for energy bill payers, energy suppliers and the wider energy sector. AI can help improve planning, management and real-time operation of the energy system, but it can have challenges and risks.
The use of AI within the energy sector has substantial potential, and our role is to encourage innovative uses of this technology. However, we must ensure it is used safely and responsibly, and to the benefit of consumers.
AI outcomes
The government has set out its action plan to ensure the UK realises the opportunities that AI provides. This includes enabling safe and trusted AI development. Read the government’s AI opportunities action plan on GOV.UK.
Our AI policy aims to protect consumers from AI harm and aligns with the government's approach.
Our approach encompasses the ethical outcomes of:
- safety
- security
- fairness
- environmental sustainability
Helping to reach net zero
AI could play a big part in decarbonising the energy sector. For example, it can be used to better predict weather that can help improve solar generation forecasts. Using the technology in this way means there should be less reliance on fossil fuels. This means that the use of AI technology can support the UK government’s medium and long-term net zero targets.
What we have done
Since our consultation on draft AI guidance in the energy sector closed on 7 February 2025, we have:
- analysed the responses from the consultation
- conducted AI Reg Lab sessions to test the draft guidance
- finalised AI guidance for energy companies and organisations
- published the first edition of AI guidance in the energy sector
