Ofgem launches investigation into British Gas switching terms

Press release

Publication date

An investigation into switching terms by British Gas has been launched by Ofgem.

The investigation will examine whether British Gas breached licence conditions relating to British Gas’ obligations to customers who switch to another supplier, including the requirement to waive termination fees.

This follows concerns raised by consumer affairs website moneysavingexpert.com.

Notes to editors

  1. For more information on the licence conditions we are examining see our Investigation into British Gas Trading Limited and its compliance with its obligations under the gas and electricity supply licences (Standard Licence Conditions 24 and 25C)
  2. Ofgem licence conditions state that suppliers should not charge termination fees for any switch that takes place within the 49 day ‘switching window’ before the expiry of a fixed term contract.
  3. The opening of this investigation does not imply that we have made any findings about non-compliance.
