Ofgem E-Serve has accredited the 50,000th installation under the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

The milestone brings the total renewable heat generated by all accredited installations to 827,000MwH. It is estimated that the scheme will save approximately 3.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over the 20-year lifespan of its accredited technologies.

Established in 2014, the Domestic RHI is designed to encourage householders to make use of renewable energy technologies to generate their own heating. It is a key policy of the UK government in its aim to meet carbon emissions reduction targets.

The scheme pays participants with accredited systems a quarterly tariff over seven years based on their renewable heat output.

Technologies eligible for payment under the Domestic RHI include: biomass boilers, ground and air-source heat pumps and solar thermal.

Gareth John, Associate Director of the Renewable Heat Incentive at Ofgem E-Serve which administers the scheme, said: “Since the launch of the Domestic RHI programme we’ve worked hard to deliver government policy through efficient administration.

“We aim to provide clear guidance to homeowners and installers to make the process of applying for and complying with the Domestic RHI as straightforward as possible.”

In the last 12 months of administering the scheme Ofgem E-Serve has received more than 14,000 telephone enquiries, answering 85% of calls within 20 seconds; made 97.8% of payments within five working days of the due date, and made decisions on 68.3% of applications within 30 working days.
