Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Guidance for Property Owners

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports the decarbonisation of heat in buildings. It provides upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales. Grants of £7,500 are available for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), and grants of £5,000 are available for Biomass boilers Grants are offered at a flat rate and do not vary by capacity of the installation, which must not exceed 45 kWth. The scheme opened for applications on 23 May 2022.  

Voucher applications made for heat pumps submitted before Monday 23 October 2023 will receive the previous grant amount. Please see Applications made before 23 October 2023 for more information. 

This guidance outlines Ofgem’s administration of the BUS. It is for property owners wishing to install a BUS funded heat pump or biomass boiler. This document was first published on 6 May 2022 as draft guidance for comment. We published an updated version on 21 July 2022 following feedback. The latest version of the guidance was published on 07 December 2023.
