Compliance and enforcement
How we ensure companies meet licence conditions and other rules for energy markets.
We stand up for consumers by monitoring compliance with the rules of companies' licences, regulations and laws.
Where we suspect market abuse or harm to consumers, our compliance and enforcement teams work with companies to put things right.
We investigate companies in energy markets that we think may have breached licence conditions, regulations or laws.
If a company in energy markets breaks the rules, we can:
- penalise companies by giving them a fine
- order companies to compensate consumers
- order companies to make changes to the services they provide
- get companies to pay to a redress scheme to put things right
Rules companies in energy markets must follow include:
-
Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations 2018
-
Regulation on Wholesale Energy Market Integrity and Transparency (REMIT)
-
Competition Act 1998
-
Consumer Rights Act 2015
