Heat networks: how to prepare for data reporting

Guidance for heat network operators and suppliers on preparing for ongoing data reporting, including roles, deadlines and support.

Introduction to data reporting

After successfully registering a heat network, operators and suppliers must regularly submit data to us. We'll need this data multiple times throughout the year, on both a quarterly and annual basis.

Data reporting is a key part of our work to protect the interests of customers and will enable us to supervise the heat network market on an ongoing basis.

Monitoring this data will support our approach to compliance, as well as improving our understanding of the sector. It will also help us identify areas for future policy work and inform any changes to our approach in the future.

Responsibility and timeline for data reporting

From Autumn 2026, heat networks can submit data using our digital service.  Before the first reporting window opens, we’ll issue a Request for Information (RFI) to all operators and suppliers of registered heat networks.

The RFI will:

  • notify registered operators and suppliers of the obligation to report data to us
  • contain a link to the guidance with the full list of data points

We’ll also send reminders before each quarterly and annual reporting window.

Help with data reporting

To help heat network operators and suppliers understand the data reporting obligations, we've published guidance on regular data reporting.

This includes general guidance on our approach, information on the submission periods and a description of each data point.

We’ll publish further guidance about the data reporting process before the first reporting period.
