Scheme name:
RO

Total obligation: 119,526,379 Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs)

The Renewables Obligation (RO) requires licensed electricity suppliers to source a proportion of the electricity they supply to UK customers from renewable sources. We set suppliers’ obligations as a number of ROCs. The obligation levels for 2024 to 2025, announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on the 26 March 2024, are:

  • 0.491 ROCs per MWh of electricity supplied to customers in England, Wales and Scotland
  • 0.192 ROCs per MWh of electricity supplied to customers in Northern Ireland

Using these obligation levels and multiplying by the total electricity supplied (in MWh) to UK customers during this obligation period (1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025), the total obligation for 2024 to 2025 is 119,526,379 ROCs. Split out for each obligation this is:

  • 107,608,506 ROCs in England and Wales
  • 10,524,875 ROCs in Scotland
  • 1,392,998 ROCs in Northern Ireland

Suppliers will have until 1 September 2025 to meet their obligations for 2024 to 2025 (31 August for buy-out payments) by opting to either:

  • present ROCs to us
  • make a buy-out payment of £64.730 per ROC
  • use a combination of ROCs and a buy-out payment

Any suppliers who do not meet their obligations in full by the end of 1 September will need to make a late payment by 31 October.
