We are introducing a new quarterly publication detailing all retail energy suppliers which have over 50,000 electricity customers and therefore need to provide additional protections to consumers with restricted meters. This information will enable consumer groups to better advise consumers and signpost clients to suppliers who have to offer a single rate tariff suitable to their meter requirements and builds on our work last year to extend protections for these consumers.
Some licence conditions only apply to suppliers with more than a certain number of customers or only apply to electricity suppliers, such as the additional protections for consumers with restricted meters (and others only to gas suppliers). Each licence condition must be read carefully to identify where this is the case.
Under electricity supply licence condition (SLC) 22G, suppliers with over 50,000 domestic electricity customers need to provide protections for customers with certain types of restricted (multi-rate) meters. Under this licence condition, suppliers must:
By publishing a list of suppliers required to comply with the restricted meter protections, consumer organisations and their clients will have a greater insight into which suppliers are obligated to comply with the rules, which could support consumers to get a better deal by switching to a new tariff or supplier.
Notes:
This list is for information purposes only and does not modify or replace the conditions in the electricity supply licence outlined under 22G, which relates to protections for customers with certain types of restricted (multi-rate) meters. Suppliers should continue to refer to the conditions outlined in the most recent version of this document. The companies we regulate are responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, licences, and codes.
We intend to update this list quarterly. In scenarios where a retail energy supplier reaches the 50,000 customer threshold through organic growth, customer acquisitions or market mergers/exits during the period between publishing updated lists, we expect suppliers to adhere to the relevant regulatory requirements.
