The Board of Ofgem has confirmed the appointment of Tim Jarvis as Chief Executive following a rigorous and competitive recruitment process.
Tim Jarvis, who has served as Interim Chief Executive since March this year, will now take up the role on a permanent basis. This will provide continuity of leadership as Ofgem continues its work to protect consumers, attract investment and support the transition to a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system.
Mark McAllister, Chair of Ofgem, said:
"I am delighted to confirm Tim's appointment as Chief Executive of Ofgem.
"Throughout his time as Interim Chief Executive, Tim has demonstrated strong leadership, sound judgement and a deep commitment to Ofgem's mission. He has led the organisation through an important period for consumers, the energy sector and Ofgem itself, while maintaining a clear focus on delivering for consumers and supporting colleagues across the organisation.
"The Board conducted a rigorous recruitment process and is confident that Tim is the right person to lead Ofgem through its next chapter. His appointment provides continuity, but it is also about the future. It gives Ofgem a clear mandate to build on the progress already made, strengthen our impact for consumers and continue evolving to meet the demands of a rapidly changing energy system.
"This winter and the months ahead will be important for millions of consumers. Ofgem has a critical role to play in protecting customers, particularly those who are struggling, while helping ensure the energy system can deliver reliable and affordable energy in the future. The Board is confident that Tim's leadership will help Ofgem meet both those immediate and longer-term responsibilities."
Tim Jarvis takes up the role permanently at a pivotal moment for the energy sector. In the coming months, he will continue to lead Ofgem’s work to protect and support consumers through a challenging period, with the crisis in the Middle East creating renewed uncertainty in global energy markets. He will also ensure the organisation is ready to meet the scale of change ahead, including driving the investment and reform needed to deliver a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system, while keeping the interests of consumers at the heart of the transition.
Tim Jarvis said:
"It is a privilege to be appointed Chief Executive of Ofgem.
“Having led the organisation over the last seven months, I have seen first-hand the expertise, professionalism and commitment of colleagues across Ofgem and the vital role the organisation plays on behalf of consumers.
"My focus will remain on delivering for consumers today while helping build the energy system of tomorrow. We know many households remain concerned about energy costs and the challenges they may face this winter. Ofgem will continue working closely with government, suppliers, consumer organisations and other partners to protect consumers, support those most in need and ensure the market works as effectively as possible.
"At the same time, we must help create the conditions for the investment, innovation and growth needed to deliver a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system for the future. Ofgem must evolve too, so we are equipped to meet the scale and pace of the change ahead.
"That means staying focused on the outcomes that matter most for consumers, acting with pace when action is needed, and working collaboratively across the sector while maintaining the trust and confidence of those we serve. I look forward to working with colleagues, consumer groups, government and industry and as we meet the challenges ahead and seize the opportunities of a changing energy system."
Prior to becoming Interim Chief Executive, Tim Jarvis served as Director General for Markets at Ofgem and has extensive experience across government, regulation and public service.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said
"I welcome Tim's appointment and look forward to continuing our work together, to create a fair and affordable energy market with consumers at its heart."
