The Confidence Code

Comparing and switching energy tariff or provider can be a confusing process. We’ve created an easy guide at, to help you think about how much you pay for your energy and shop around for the best deal.

We have also approved a number of online comparison services that are a good place to look when comparing deals. These websites operate in accordance with our Confidence Code and can also be trusted as a source of information when you are looking at different deals and tariffs.

What is the Confidence Code?

The Confidence Code is a Code of Practice that governs independent energy price comparison sites.

It insists that its members follow key principles for how they must operate their service. So using a site with the Confidence Code logo means that the process of switching energy supplier should be easier, more reliable and reassuring for you. Further information on the requirements accredited sites must follow can be found in the Confidence Code – Code of Practice.

We took on the Code from Consumer Focus in 2013 and have reviewed it to make sure it provides the right protections for consumers. Based on feedback from our consultations and what we think should be expected of accredited sites, we published our revised Code in March 2015.

The new Code means accredited sites must meet tighter standards on how tariffs are displayed so consumers can be confident they can find the best deals in the market. They will also have to list prominently which energy companies they have commission arrangements with, and make it clear that they can earn commission on certain tariffs.

Why choose a site covered by the Confidence Code?

The sites covered by the Confidence Code act independently of suppliers, so you can be sure that when you are presented with options and prices, they have been calculated and are displayed in a fair and unbiased way.

They can help you find the best deal for you in your local area and provide you with a free and easy-to-use switching service. They also give detailed information on each tariff, including gas and electricity unit prices and any discounts that are available.
