We are consulting on licence changes to clarify that suppliers and installers can provide information on low carbon technologies during smart meter installation visits.
Consultation description
We are seeking views on proposed changes to Electricity Supply Licence Standard Condition 41 and Gas Supply Licence Standard Condition 35. The proposed changes clarify that suppliers and their smart meter installers may provide domestic consumers with objective information about low carbon technologies during a smart meter installation visit.
This could include factual information on the availability, energy efficiency, and potential costs and benefits of technologies such as heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage and electric vehicle chargers. The proposed changes are intended to clarify the distinction between objective information and marketing activity.
Marketing activities during the smart meter installation visit would continue to be prohibited unless the domestic consumer has provided prior consent. Any discussion about low carbon technologies would need to be non-promotional, secondary to the purpose of the installation visit, and capable of being ended immediately if the consumer or a member of their household asks for it to stop.
