The current RIIO-2 price controls for electricity and gas transmission and gas distribution networks run until March 2026, with the price control for electricity distribution running for 5 years until March 2028. We have now set out the framework design for the network price controls that will replace these.

On 10 March 2023 we launched the Future Systems and Networks Regulation consultation setting out proposals on the framework for the next round of price controls.

On 26 July 2023 we published our decision not to introduce a short-term control in the gas sectors, and instead to develop a medium-term ex-ante price control for the gas networks, starting in 2026. We explained how we arrived at this conclusion, and indicate the next steps in the process, in order to help gas network companies to start planning for the next price control review as effectively as possible at this stage.

Today we publish our decision to the Future Systems and Networks Regulation consultation. The Overview document sets out the context and the decisions that we took on the back of this engagement; and the Core document gives more detailed analysis of the consultation responses as well as the stakeholder engagement we conducted through working groups, as well as some emerging thinking.

We will now develop the methodology for applying the framework for the gas distribution networks, the electricity transmission networks and the gas transmission network. We will publish consultations on these sector-specific methodologies in December, where we will provide further detail on our approach.
