Gas and Electricity Markets Authority

Mae’r dudalen yma ar gael yn Gymraeg.

Our governing body is the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority and is referred to variously as GEMA or the Authority. It comprises non-executive and executive members and a non-executive chair.

GEMA’s purpose

Our core purpose is to ensure that all consumers can get good value and service from the energy market.  In support of this we favour market solutions where practical, incentive regulation for monopolies and an approach that seeks to enable innovation and beneficial change whilst protecting consumers.

We will ensure that Ofgem will operate as an efficient organisation, driven by skilled and empowered staff, that will act quickly, predictably and effectively in the consumer interest, based on independent and transparent insight into consumers’ experiences and the operation of energy systems and markets.

Authority members

The Authority members are appointed by the Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and include five Non-Executive Directors.

Powers and duties

The Authority's powers and duties are largely provided for in statute (such as the Gas Act 1986, the Electricity Act 1989, the Utilities Act 2000, the Competition Act 1998, the Enterprise Act 2002 and the Energy Acts of 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2011) as well as ruling European Community legislation in respect of energy regulation.

Full information on the Authority’s powers and duties, its rules and procedures and its various committees can be found in the links box at the top of this page.

Meetings

The Authority meets at least 10 times a year, usually monthly except in January and August. Much of the work of the Authority is carried forward by its Committees and through the advice they provide to the Authority. A schedule of planned meetings and previous minutes of the meetings of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority are published below.
