3. Local Area Energy Mapping and Planning

3.1.Representatives from BEIS provided an update on Local Area Energy Mapping and Planning. The group was then asked to comment, with attendees welcoming action in the area and particularly noting the benefits of rapid progress. The discussion covered heat and transport specifically, particularly how to encourage joined up thinking and overcome existing barriers. Also discussed was the role UK Government could play in supporting Local Authorities. Finally, the discussion covered prioritisation, and which steps could be taken first with regards to local area energy planning.

4. RIIO-ED2 Strategic Investment

4.1. Ofgem provided an update on the recently received draft RIIO-ED2 business plans, particularly noting the approaches to strategic investment as outlined by the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) in their plans. This included the assessment of proposed investments in the next price control period. Following the presentation, attendees were invited to comment on the update. Attendees particularly noted the need to encourage flexibility, as well as ensure network capacity was not a constraint on decarbonisation. This related specifically to how the business plans categorise investments and its future pathways. Specifically, the group discussed electric vehicles and local energy in terms of how they could be further enabled through the DNOs and Ofgem’s plans.
