Ofgem has today granted Balfour Beatty Equitix Consortium (BBEC) a licence to operate the £160 million high voltage link to the Humber Gateway wind farm for the next 20 years.

BBEC, a consortium comprising Balfour Beatty Investments Ltd and Equitix Ltd, was selected by Ofgem following a tender process in which bidders compete to become offshore transmission owners. Today’s licence grant completes the third tender round of the regime.

The Humber Gateway wind farm, located in the North Sea approximately eight kilometres off the coast of Yorkshire, has 73 wind turbines and a total installed capacity of 219MW. The transmission assets for it were constructed by E.ON Climate & Renewables UK Humber Wind Ltd. Humber Gateway is the second and final project tendered under the third tender round. The third round has delivered £333 million of transmission assets in total.

Since the OFTO regime was set up by Ofgem and the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 2009 it has attracted nearly £3 billion investment and led to significant savings in the costs of delivering offshore wind.
