In March 2016, our Consumer First Panellists were asked to think about future changes in the market (over the next 10-15 years), and to discuss potential future business models.

Specifically we asked Panellists:

  • How consumers would like to interact with the market in the future (10-15 years)?
  • In what way are their views different to the current arrangements and  existing non-traditional business models?
  • Which hypothetical future business models (of those presented) appeal to consumers and why?
  • Which of these business models might encourage consumers to engage more with the energy market?

Panellists discussed the following potential business models:

  • Peer-to-peer energy
  • Power of attorney
  • Energy service model
  • Local energy models
  • Longer term contracts
  • Pay-as-you-go power.
