Smart meters store consumers’ consumption data in much greater detail than traditional meters.  Consumers’ data is protected under general privacy laws, including the Data Protection Act 1998. One of the Information Commissioner’s Office duties is to regulate and enforce compliance with the Date Protection Act. Further protections for consumers’ privacy are contained in conditions in supplies’ licences and industry codes. Ofgem monitors companies to ensure they abide by their licence conditions and can take action to enforce compliance.

This Memorandum of Understanding sets out how Ofgem and the Information Commissioner’s Office will work together to continue to protect consumers’ privacy as smart meters become installed in more consumers’ homes.
