Ofgem has been working alongside Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) on a major consultation on the future of Shetland’s electricity supply. The islands’ power station is ageing and needs replacing.

The consultation seeks views on how best to meet the islands’ future energy needs.  In early 2015, SHEPD will launch a competitive process for this.

Shetland is currently an isolated network and the cost of generating power is much higher than on the mainland. The competitive process creates an excellent opportunity for implementing a smart grid to its full potential.

This consultation is an opportunity for all interested parties to shape the tender documents with ideas including; new generation technologies, ways to manage or reduce demand, and other smart grid solutions.

The consultation will run for eight weeks until 19 December 2014, with open events planned on Shetland and in Glasgow.

There’s more information on SHEPD's website, which also includes an online response form.
