Western Power Distribution

Interconnection of Western Power Distribution (WPD) and National Grid Company (NGC) supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems (WPDT1001)

This project looks to establish a real time link between the SCADA systems operated by NGC and WPD such that data on either system can be viewed on the other in real time.

Network Management on the Isles of Scilly (WPDT1002)

This Project will establish real time monitoring on all of the distribution substations on the Isles of Scilly to maximise the use of the generation facilities on the islands and secure supplies to the islands.

Photo Voltaic (PV) impact on Suburban networks (CNT1001)

This project was registered before the networks formerly operated by Central Networks were purchased by WPD

The project will monitor the profile of eight selected substations or individual feeders in areas where PV panels have already been installed or are expected to be installed.

Hook Norton Low Carbon Community Smart Grid (CNT1002)

This project was registered before the networks formerly operated by Central Networks were purchased by WPD

This Project will develop and explore customer engagement and incentive programmes in Hook Norton. It will trial Power Line Communications technology, monitoring solutions, a telecommunications network and a small scale domestic demand response trial.

Voltage Control System Demonstration Project (WPDT1003)

This project looks at the effectiveness of Static VAr Compensators for Distribution Networks as a system to control voltage on 11kV rural networks. This could address the issue of fluctuations in long distribution lines in a rural area with connected Distributed Generation (DG).

Early learning of LV network impacts from estate PV cluster (WPDT1004)

This project will install two different size LV cables in parallel to an existing cable, with linking facilities at each end. It looks to provide a real life, on load, capability to change the impedance of the feeding LV cable and measure resulting changes in voltage performance.

Seasonal Generation Deployment (WPDT1005)

This project will explore a solution to reduce the impact of increasing peak demand on the existing network. It will test the technical aspects associated with controllable demand and automated generation, and development of innovative commercial arrangements for generation availability and operation.  The project will deliver new learning on the cost effectiveness of such arrangements.

LV Current Sensor Technology Evaluation (WPDT1006)

This is a collaborative project between WPD and UKPN to evaluate a range of LV monitoring solutions under laboratory conditions at the National Physical Laboratory and in the field on their low voltage networks, equipping at total of 28 substations with sensors from 7 different manufacturers.

Implementation of an active fault level management scheme (WPDT1007)

The project aims to expedite distributed generation connections through monitoring fault level conditions in real-time. This will also allow a practical understanding of how close simulated fault levels are to actual values. Real-time fault level monitoring will be used to manage the connection of a distributed generator to increase the power supplied from renewable energy resources and to manage the fault level to avoid exceeding equipment ratings.

Community Energy Action (WPDT1008)

This project looks to determine if demand side response is effective for communities who have demand information and incentives available to them. WPD will collect community level electricity network and energy flow data and share it with the community via a website and specially designed energy monitor that can display the individual's demand and the overall community demand. WPD will incentivise the communities to reduce demand at peak periods of the day to reduce potential overloading of the LV network.

Electric Boulevards (WPDT1009)

This project will facilitate the decarbonisation of the public transport system by determining the infrastructure requirements for inductive power transfer (IPT) chargers and trial new techniques of connecting these devices to the distribution system.

 Stored battery energy on the buses will be supplemented by opportunistic wireless charging around the route and the application of charge deferral to alleviate network constraints.
