Vacancy description

The Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA) is a non-Ministerial Government Department whose members are appointed by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. The purpose of the Authority is to set the strategy and oversee the work of Ofgem, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets.

Person specification

The successful candidates will demonstrate a wide range of the following qualities or skills:

  • Proven leadership skills in large and complex organisations.
  • The ability to contribute and inspire confidence with a wide range of stakeholders both in formal environments (such as Board meetings) and in less formal environments (such as one-to-one meetings with Executives).
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate good judgement and high levels of integrity. This as part of a commitment to the seven principles of conduct in public life.
  • Genuine interest in contributing to the effective running of Ofgem.
  • An engaging and collaborative working style together with adaptability. A successful candidate will demonstrate the skills to engage with a range of stakeholders across all sections of society.
  • All candidates will need to demonstrate expertise in governance at a strategic level.

In addition, it would be desirable for candidates to have expertise in one or more of the following:

Substantial practical experience of the energy utilities sector, with at least one of the final appointments having a high level of engineering/technical expertise.

Experience in the development and/or deployment of innovative technological solutions, not necessarily in the energy sector, in either an academic or industrial context.
