Ofgem welcomes Competition and Markets Authority’s provisional decision on remedies

Press release

Please see our statement in response to the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) publication this morning of its provisional decision on remedies in its energy market investigation.

Dermot Nolan, chief executive of Ofgem, said:

“The CMA’s provisional decision on remedies is an important step towards making the market more competitive and fairer for consumers, especially the vulnerable.

The proposed safeguard cap for pre-payment meters (PPMs) combines with our work to remove unnecessary fees for PPMs and to make it easier for these consumers to switch.

The CMA package of remedies, combined with smart meters and faster switching, should clear the way to secure a new and better deal for consumers.

We will now work closely with the CMA on how these proposed remedies should be implemented to ensure that consumers get the full benefits.”*

*Subject to these remedies being confirmed by the final report in June.
