The Renewables Obligation (RO) requires UK electricity suppliers to source an increasing proportion of electricity from renewable sources. This obligation can be met by presenting Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) or by paying into a ‘buy out’ fund.

Operators of eligible renewable generating stations are able to obtain ROCs for the renewable electricity they generate by seeking accreditation and meeting the ROC issuance requirements.

The following pages contain information on how to apply for the RO and submit output data.

Operators of fuelled stations should visit our pages on how the sustainability of fuels can impact eligibility for support and how fuel volume and calorific content must be accounted for.

Microgenerators in Northern Ireland should visit our page on MicroNIRO accreditation.
