Last year Ofgem completed a major investigation into Britain’s retail energy market. The Probe found that, while competition is working well in a number of important areas, certain parts of the market needed closer attention.
Ofgem has now put in place a package of reforms which will make it easier for consumers to shop around, negotiate and choose the best energy deal. This package includes:
- The introduction of new licence conditions prohibiting unjustified price differences;
- A standard annual statement covering, among other things, the name of the customer’s tariff and their consumption;
- Written quotations before doorstep sales and proof that the offer made on the doorstep is better than the customer’s existing deal; and
- New protections for small businesses.
The energy supply probe page provides more information about the findings of the investigation and the complete packages of remedies.
