Ofgem is committed to a competitive market for gas and electricity metering. We think this can deliver smarter metering, better service and lower metering costs than under the previous arrangements of monopoly provision by network companies.
Since 2000, Ofgem has worked with the industry to establish the arrangements and processes needed to facilitate competition, including setting separate price controls on network businesses for their metering activities.
A number of commercial metering businesses are already active in the Great Britain market, and we expect competition to accelerate further as regulated arrangements begin to fall away.
