Tony Burne 

 

Tony Burne is the policy advisor to the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority. 

After a doctorate in Chemistry, Tony joined the former Ministry of Agriculture , Fisheries and Food  - now Defra - as an Assistant Principal, working closely with Ministers, Parliament , the EU and  stakeholders  across a range of policy posts in the Department.

These included responsibility for several aspects of fisheries conservation, nationally and internationally; animal welfare; livestock (and Chernobyl);  privatisation of the water authorities and setting up the NRA then Environment Agency; budgets and finance; organic farming ; energy; education and training; TSEs ; and, in his last job, responsibility for science and science strategy in the department.

There were also spells as a Private Secretary to two Ministers, and a five year secondment to the FCO at the British Embassy in Washington, dealing mainly with trade policy and promotion matters across the department's interests.

He joined the Authority on retirement from Defra in late 2004 as Policy Assistant to the Chairman and Secretary to the Authority.
