Alistair Buchanan has been Chief Executive of Ofgem since 2003.  He is a Council member of Durham University and is Chair of the University’s Remuneration Committee.  Previously he was a Non Executive Director for Scottish Water and was a member of the UK Energy Research Partnership (UKERP).  He was appointed CBE in December 2008.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, training with KPMG.  Before Ofgem his working career has been in the financial sector with leading investment banks, as both an award winning analyst and as Head of Research, in London and New York.

In recent years Alistair has led Ofgem in three “landmark” projects.  In March 2008 he launched a whole scale review of the RPI-X formula which led in 2010 to the creation of the “RIIO” model for regulatory price controls.  In March 2009 he started “Project Discovery” which provided a root and branch review of GB’s medium term security of supply outlook.  Both of these projects followed the unbundling of the gas distribution businesses out of National Grid.
